2008 Monterey Music Summit

The Monterey Music Summit is a multi-medium, interactive arts festival created to serve as a forum for new thought and inspired intervention regarding the critical political and environmental issues of our time. In step with this progressive theme, the Monterey Music Summit continued its commitment to be a zero waste carbon neutral event. The Offset Project worked on the following mitigation efforts for the pending music festival.
  • All ticket holders to receive free mass transportation to and from the event.
  • The first 1,000 ticket holders to receive a free reusable #2 water bottle.
  • Dispensed filtered water to be available through out the event.
  • Run all event generators on 600 gallons of biofuel.
  • 700 trees to be planted in order to offset the event’s carbon emissions.
  • The Summit would initiate a composting center for the event’s food items and service ware.
  • These zero waste stations represent the first ever food waste diversion at a Monterey County event of this size.
  • The Summit would increase last year’s waste diversion rate of 50% Backstage catering to include only local, organic, sustainably farmed foods.
  • Vendors to follow “Green” guidelines that are mandatory for this year’s event, Use 100% recycled or bio-banner materials for venue signage.

The Monterey Music Summit planned to increase steps made last year on areas such as waste diversion, vendor product usage and supporting local and sustainable industries. Bottle water sales were to be replaced with Nalgene bottles offering free filtered water stations. In 2007, 1,140 plastic water bottles were diverted. All service ware was to be 100% biodegradable and waste diversion continued to be a priority. Local food and sustainable industries continued to be a main focus through backstage catering and event demonstrations.

Over 30 performances to occur over three stages, offering attendees everything from regional favorites to international icons of pop, rock, folk and world music. Spoken word presentations, performance art and a drumming circle to complement some of the more intimate venues throughout the weekend.
