BaROCK the Peninsula

0 Waste Recycle Store

The Offset Project set up a Zero Waste Recycle Store at the recent BaROCK the Peninsula fund raiser at the Fairgrounds. The idea was to encourage recycling by making it a fun interactive experience for everyone at the event. And to show that recycling adds up to money and cool stuff! The Zero Waste Team searched the venue for anyone putting items into the recycle containers. Once spotted, they were given a ticket for each item that was placed in the bin. The more tickets they collected throughout the event, the more stuff they could buy at the store.

As a bike incentive, The Offset Project also partnered with Monterey Green Action to provide a bike valet service in front of the Fairgrounds. This was supposed to help with the dreaded parking problems the Fairground has been facing and it is a fun interactive way to encourage cycling. Many bikes came despite the rain. Passion Purveyors, Monterey's local provider of compostable service ware will offer vendors discounted rates to all BaROCK vendors to help reduce the amount of waste generated. Price List

2008 Monterey Music Summit

The Monterey Music Summit is a multi-medium, interactive arts festival created to serve as a forum for new thought and inspired intervention regarding the critical political and environmental issues of our time. In step with this progressive theme, the Monterey Music Summit continued its commitment to be a zero waste carbon neutral event. The Offset Project worked on the following mitigation efforts for the pending music festival.
  • All ticket holders to receive free mass transportation to and from the event.
  • The first 1,000 ticket holders to receive a free reusable #2 water bottle.
  • Dispensed filtered water to be available through out the event.
  • Run all event generators on 600 gallons of biofuel.
  • 700 trees to be planted in order to offset the event’s carbon emissions.
  • The Summit would initiate a composting center for the event’s food items and service ware.
  • These zero waste stations represent the first ever food waste diversion at a Monterey County event of this size.
  • The Summit would increase last year’s waste diversion rate of 50% Backstage catering to include only local, organic, sustainably farmed foods.
  • Vendors to follow “Green” guidelines that are mandatory for this year’s event, Use 100% recycled or bio-banner materials for venue signage.

Deborah Lindsay for PG City Council

The Offset Project is running the first ever carbon neutral campaign to offset a political office. A system has been set up in order to calculate the emissions of her campaign committee and her entire two year term. These calculation include miles driven, marketing efforts, merchandise and office equipment used.

“Having a carbon neutral campaign has really forced our committee to be mindful of the actions we are taking. It is a great example of how we can bring change into our daily lives” says Lindsay.

The Offset Project will offset Deborah’s emissions by calculating her emissions in terms of Kwh and then reduce this same amount of energy at the Pacific Grove Middle School. The Offset Project has partnered with the Rightlights Program to provide an energy audit and offer supplemental subsidies. The remaining mitigation will be partially supported by Deborah's offset.

2008 Good Old Days

The Offset Project helped continue the carbon neutral campaign for Good Old Days two years in a row. Partnering with both Sustainable PG and Trees for PG, The Offset Project planted 845 trees in order to offset the emissions from the city’s largest event. Trees were passed out during the event and the rest were planted in George Washington park by Forest Grove Elementary School.

The trees are watered every week by volunteers from both Trees for PG and The Offset Project. Carbon Report...
