The Offset Project’s mission is to inspire the community toward green action, one sustainable project at a time. Since 2007, The Offset Project has initiated a wide range of projects that focus on reducing our impact on the earth while bringing communities together through education. Our focus is to create sustainability at the grassroots level. Currently, we are working to further two initiatives: the Monterey County Carbon Offset Fund and the development of zero waste strategies in our community.
The Monterey County Carbon Offset Fund funnels local offset money into renewable energy projects that support economic development in our communities. Companies usually support offsets that are unaccountable such as planting trees oversees or selling renewable energy credits on the stock exchange. Â However, our intent is to keep these offsets local in order to support local jobs and local development.
Businesses and non-profits are not currently dedicating the resources that are needed to create zero waste programs. The lack of interest usually stems from budget restraints or lack of education.  They need someone to help them determine what mitigation needs to be done and then go out and find the funding for them. The Offset Project brings resources together under one umbrella in order to provide a cohesive impact for the community to use to make change.
